managing your personal finance

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

In February of 2007, 83.24 percent of users visiting TechCrunch did so from a Windows machine. One year later, in February 2008, the stranglehold remained firm at 80.44 percent. In February 2009, the number was at 74.04 percent. Last year, it was 61.59 percent. And this year? The number of people visiting our site from Windows machines dipped to 53.84 percent.

The writing is on the wall.

Look at those numbers again for a second. In four years, Windows share among TechCrunch readers has fallen 30 percentage points. That’s incredible.

The knee-jerk reaction in the comment section will likely be something like “it’s because you guys cover Apple so much”. But the fact of the matter is that Macintosh share, after rising for three of those four years, fell last year as well. It’s the mobile devices — specifically the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices — that are eating away at Windows.

In fact, if the trend over the past four years continues at about the same pace, in two years, devices made by Apple (Macs, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads) will surpass devices that run Windows as the top visitors to TechCrunch. And depending on how popular the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and OS X Lion are, it could easily happen next year.

Here are the broken down numbers:

Feb 2007

  • Windows: 83.24%

  • Mac: 13.59%

  • Linux: 2.51%

Feb 2008

  • Windows: 80.44%

  • Mac: 15.15%

  • Linux: 2.97%

  • iPhone: 0.77%

  • iPod: 0.15%

Feb 2009

  • Windows: 74.04%

  • Mac: 20.48%

  • Linux: 3.01%

  • iPhone: 1.60%

  • iPod: 0.28%

  • Android: 0.09%

Feb 2010

  • Windows: 61.59%

  • Mac: 28.62%

  • iPhone: 4.07%

  • Linux: 3.49%

  • Android: 0.87%

  • iPod: 0.53%

Feb 2011

  • Windows: 53.84%

  • Mac: 27.64%

  • iPhone: 6.72%

  • iPad: 3.44%

  • Linux: 3.28%

  • Android: 3.06%

  • iPod: 0.62%

While even the last batch of stats shows that Windows still has a nice cushion over number two, Mac, if you add the Apple products put together, it’s a different story.

  • Feb 2007: 13.59% Apple products

  • Feb 2008: 16.07% Apple products

  • Feb 2009: 22.36% Apple products

  • Feb 2010: 33.22% Apple products

  • Feb 2011: 38.42% Apple products

In the four year span, Apple has added 25 percentage points to their share among TechCrunch readers. That nearly all of the 30 percentage points that Windows lost in that same span (Android’s growth pretty much fills in the rest).

So it currently stands at Microsoft’s 53.84 percent versus Apple’s 38.42 percent. Again, a big year for iPad, iPhone, and Mac could mean a changing of the guard as soon as next year. But unless something drastic changes, you can be sure that Apple will be dominant among TechCrunch readers in two years.

The latest rumors have Windows 8 showing up sometime in mid/late 2012. But the fact of the matter is that Windows 7, much more widely praised than the disaster that was Vista, hasn’t helped Microsoft buck this trend among our readers. Perhaps they’re only hope of gaining back share at this point is Windows Phone. So far, that hasn’t been going too well. Nokia should help that, but will it be enough to offset the Windows losses?

Humorously, Microsoft’s best hope for not falling to Apple may well be Android. If Google’s platform continues to make gains, it could prolong Apple passing Microsoft.

But again, Apple has iPhone 5, iPad 2, and OS X Lion on the immediate horizon — all within the next few months. And then there’s the very real possibility of another iPad in the fall.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 5 are likely to push the Apple share forward immediately. But don’t sleep on OS X Lion either. The early indications are that Apple has indeed made it much more iOS-like. That means millions of iPad/iPhone/iPod touch owners who have traditionally been PC users, are going to feel a lot more comfortable on a Mac than ever before.

And a new PC-to-Mac data migration system built in to Lion will only help that.

OS X Lion is going to feed off of iOS users, and vice versa. And the Mac ecosystem is going to continue to expand. Just as happened in the browser world with Chrome taking over, a transition is happening among TechCrunch readers in the ecosystem space. The numbers don’t lie. And Microsoft better pray that our readers aren’t leading indicators of overall trends in the space — which is exactly what you have been in the past.

Apple advertises its products as magical. They’re at the intersection of “technology and the liberal arts,” Steve Jobs said today. Something that moves your heart, not just your lust for technology. Will consumers still buy that in 2011?

The big picture question of the day is whether Apple has done it again. With the original iPad, Apple crushed its rivals, taking more than 90 percent of the tablet market in 2010 and selling more than 15 million units. Jobs predicted today that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Based on what I have seen today, I think he’s mostly, but not entirely, right.

Competitors will discover that Apple has a lot of inherent financial advantages, including being a low-cost leader. That may not sound intuitive, but I believe it has to be true. It is selling so much volume of its products that it can get discounts on parts and manufacturing services that no one else can get.

When it sells its products in stores, it also doesn’t have to give away 20 percent of the margin to a retailer. That is a huge financial advantage. Carriers are also willing to subsidize the costs of Apple products in a way that they won’t with other tablet vendors. All of these things may explain why the Motorola Xoom, a very cool product, is selling for $800 while Apple has priced its new devices at $499 to $829, (and dropped the price of the old iPad to $399). Apple has also left very little room for rivals here, since it has signed up both AT&T and Verizon. Perhaps there is room for rivals to sell $199 machines, but users probably aren’t going to like them.

Those are reasons why any cool Apple mobile product could beat other rivals. But Apple has also done some smart things with the iPad 2. It has created another rev of its microprocessor, the A5, which has two cores, or computing brains. And it has nine times faster graphics than its old A4 chip. Since Apple designs this chip itself, it doesn’t have to give away much margin to a chip design firm. It only has to give a small margin to a chip manufacturer such as Samsung to make the chips.

Apple has also custom-designed the A5 to run Apple applications on a device with a 10-hour battery life. Apple should have an edge there, as it won’t sell the A5 to rivals. But if this is an advantage, it isn’t likely to last long, as Nvidia is being very aggressive with a new quad-core chip that it could sell to any Android rivals.

The design of the iPad 2 is where Apple has more advantages. The iPad 2 will have faster web-browsing with a new version of Safari. It has two cameras that will inspire a lot of video and photo-related apps. The availability of the Mac applications — iMovie, Garage Band, and Photo Booth — on the iPad 2 will make a lot of users happy. More interesting features will come with new releases of the iOS, or Apple’s operating system in the fairly near future.

There are some users who won’t like the restrictions of Apple’s ecosystem. If they want universal serial bus (USB) and SD card ports, they are out of luck. Apple didn’t change the resolution of its screen either, leaving it at 1024 x 768. Competitors could add these options and put emphasis on them as selling points. (Critics are disappointed that Apple did not improve the display, but that’s a big cost issue others have too).

Apple has also made great improvements in the feel of the product. It’s 33 percent thinner, 2 ounces lighter, and it has a wonderful new screen cover that doubles as a stand for the device. (It wakes up the device when you peel it back and it has micro-fibers that clean the screen when the cover is on).

Now here is why Jobs is not entirely right. Apple has come up with a stunning machine at prices that the competitors will have a hard time beating. But it is almost inevitable that Android-based tablets will gain market share on Apple.

So far, I don’t see the Android machine that will beat the iPad 2. But the potential is there, given ingredients such as Android 3.0, Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and other fast microprocessors, and 4G LTE. The latter is the main weakness in Apple’s armor.

LTE is fast, with a minimum speed on Verizon at around 12 megabits a second and actual speeds running much higher than that now. Getting access to 4G LTE is as big a benefit as having access to lots of cool apps, from my point of view. Right now, the timing of the still-young LTE technology means that Apple cannot yet put it into its mass-produced, lowest-cost tablet computers.

If LTE costs come down sometime soon, then Apple can launch a new version of the iPad to incorporate the technology. But it’s not a simple upgrade, as it means that the hardware of the machine — including the radio chip — has to change. And for now, LTE chips are larger than their 3G equivalents, so the heat dissipation and product size are affected. In other words, LTE can force Apple to redesign the iPad.

Apple can do that. But Android tablet makers might be able to move faster than Apple directly into the 4G LTE tablet market. If they do that, then they will have found a scenario where they could steal a march on Apple. Apple is not likely to let that gap last for a long time, but it might be enough for Apple to lose some share this year.

Apple’s leadership position in this market will be hard to beat, but the collective weight and reach of Android rivals could erode it. And here’s a sobering thought: If Apple eventually winds up with only 30 percent of the tablet market, it could still be No. 1, and its place as the largest technology company in the world will not be at risk.

Check out Apple’s overview video on the iPad 2 and Jobs’ comments on technology and the liberal arts below.

Making Things Worse

by digby

Who could have ever imagined that electing a criminal tea partier to the highest office in the state would cause problems?

Rick Scott, the conservative Republican billionaire who plucked the governor’s job from the party establishment in November with $73 million of his own money and the backing of the Tea Party, vowed during his campaign to run the troubled state like a corporate chief executive (which he was) and not a politician (which he proudly says he is not).

And now it has become a problem, some of his fellow Republicans say.

“The governor doesn’t understand there is a State Constitution and that we have three branches of government,” said State Senator Mike Fasano, a Republican from New Port Richey who upset Mr. Scott with rough handling of his staff during a testy committee hearing. “They are talking about the attitude that he is still the C.E.O. of his former health care corporation, and that is not going to work in this state, in Tallahassee, in my district. The people believe in three branches of government.”

Republican lawmakers in Florida were hoping for a smoother transition. Instead, they say, they got top-down management from a political novice.

With the Legislature convening on Tuesday for a potentially arduous two-month session that is bound to usher in major cuts in spending and jobs and radical changes to education, pensions, unemployment benefits and Medicaid, the governor will be tested on a broader, more public scale. Florida faces an estimated $3.6 billion budget shortfall this year and has a stubborn 12 percent unemployment rate.

“I think there have been some understandable growing pains because government doesn’t function like a corporation,” said Speaker Dean Cannon, a Republican from central Florida, taking a more measured tone than Mr. Fasano.

Read the whole article. Basically, he believes that he is now a monarch and can do anything he wants without any input from the other electe4d leaders. And here's a little taste of what he plans to do:

Mr. Scott is single-minded in his plans to shake up Florida and create jobs. He wants to create a business-friendly environment, chop up the bureaucracy, peel away regulations and hand out $1.7 billion in tax cuts for corporations and property owners in the first year of his budget. Privatizing Medicaid and prisons is also high on the agenda.

In his budget proposal, Mr. Scott is seeking to eliminate more than 8,500 state jobs, including in the Corrections and Health Departments. His budget for the state’s already lean public schools is $1.75 billion less than this year’s, mostly because federal stimulus money dried up.

And he wants to cut costs in Florida’s pension fund by requiring more than 600,000 government workers, including police officers, teachers, firefighters, judges and retirees, to contribute 5 percent to their retirement. New employees would use plans similar to a 401(k). This has angered state workers, who have gone without a general raise since 2006. They plan large demonstrations around Florida on Tuesday.

Maybe this is what Floridians wanted, but I doubt it. On the other hand, it's what they should have expected. Rick Scott may be the looniest, most dishonest, powerful elected official in the country. And it was easy to see that going in. Stay tuned.

What to Expect Whenever Getting a Roofing Contractors

When the time comes to correct or substitute your homes roof, it can be a daunting job to find somebody that is qualified for the job. There are many roofing companies available, however the types who'll perform a great job for any sensible cost aren't frequently easy to find. If you're in the market for a service provider, use the ideas below with regard to interviewing as well as hiring the correct one.

Interview and Discussion

Karma Foley Interview by kino-eye

Most roofing contractors provide totally free consultations. This is especially important, because it provides them a chance to assess what your homes roof requirements, also it gives you an opportunity to evaluate them. As with all of companies, trust your intuition concerning the individuals you let up onto your roofing. No issue exactly how great the contractor's status or suggestion, he or she ought to begin by presenting you having a business greeting card. If a service provider arrives looking and talking in an less than professional manner, most likely the task he's going to perform will also be less than professional. This isn't to express that you ought to expect companies to reach in fits. They is going to be hiking in your roof, so the majority of will be dressed in denim jeans and work footwear or athletic shoes. If the actual service provider appears to be interested in talking upon their mobile phone during your roof than he's in analyzing your own roof's needs, which may be another sign that he's not really the one for the job. For your lawful safety, be certain that the service provider has sufficient liability insurance coverage.

Roofing Assessment

let's face it -- this roof needs a redo by favourite waste of time

Expect the contractor is going to be rising on your roof. Actually, any contractor who does not need to increase on your roofing to judge the problem should be instantly discounted. Those who are seriously interested in their function will possibly create a sketching of your roof's surface area and tag problem areas on it because they undergo their evaluation, or they'll take photos or even video of the surface area while they're available online for. This is a very important step, since it allows you to observe just what the troubles are as well as know how they will be set.

Estimate

Roofing And Roofing Contractor In NORTON, MA by roofinghub

The next phase will be the written estimate. The contractor will take away their calculator and come up with an itemized estimation. Some contractors goes to their vehicle or even van and write up the actual suggestion, while some will crisis the actual amounts for the job in front of you. Once you are given the suggestion, ensure that you comprehend exactly which products will be used, just how long the job will take and when you will find any extra or even concealed expenses that could occur throughout the repair from the roofing. The contractor should be able to answer all of these questions with ease as well as forewarn a person associated with a additional expenses that could be sustained should the roof's ethics be broken inside.

Once you have obtained several created estimates from roofing contractors, evaluate exactly what each organization or service provider would like to offer you for the cost. Do not always low cost the highest bet, because occasionally the greatest bid will in reality be the contractor who does the job correctly. Also, be wary of bids which are not nearly as expensive other people. They may be using inferior items or be untruthful concerning the chance of hidden costs. Above all, believe in intuition as well as go with the service provider who makes you feel quite comfortable regarding giving over your money.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

If it had been actually in doubt, information obtained through the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese language government worries over its continued charge of the location it calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The leaked out cables from U.S. diplomats show the extent to which Chinese authorities make an effort to persuade government authorities globally to consider its position upon issues affecting Uyghurs. The actual cables also display the U . s . States' concerns as well as sights regarding the ongoing repressive measures in the area.

uyghur by sarvaz

The majority of lighting of Chinese government pressure are the cables pointing in order to Chinese language frustration, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to third countries. The Dec Twenty nine, 08 cable applies how Chinese language Assistant International Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled using the Ough.S. Ambassador to China in order to voice Beijing's powerful opposition of release in order to any kind of country apart from The far east, which if the Ough.S. did indeed accede for this request it might "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and also to co-operation ‘in essential areas'". In addition, a February '09 cable television describes how the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfriendly behave towards us" and a "slap in the face". That the U.S. government was firm in not really liberating the detainees to China illustrates the extent from the politicized nature of the Chinese language judicial system. Genuine concerns more than terrorism are easy to understand, however in the Ough.Utes. government's observe the detainees might probably face torture and execution if they returned to The far east

Chinese language federal government pressure in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only put on the actual U.Utes. federal government, but additionally in order to Brand new Zealand along with a handful of Western government authorities which were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, as well as Eu member states all have the symptoms of borne the impact associated with Chinese language federal government disappointment. Regarding Indonesia, which was at first willing to consider two Uyghurs on solely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances were much less preferable to other detainees due to the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs would have upon relations along with The far east. A May 8, '09 cable relates exactly how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented which Indonesia had informed China from the Ough.S. request to simply accept some Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had already been subsequently cautioned by The far east associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia had been to accept any detainees".

The diplomatic cables also discuss the actual unrest within Urumchi, the actual regional capital, within This summer '09. The This summer Thirteen, '09 cable discussing bulk occurrences within China states:

"Ethnic riots such as those who work in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 as well as in Tibet in March of 08 vary substantially within origin and character through mass incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed in order to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both present serious problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Party management would not hesitate to spread out fire upon Uighurs or even Tibetans when they considered this necessary to recover purchase. Bulk incidents present a different type of threat, he said, as the management is actually ‘afraid' to fireplace upon Han rioters with regard to anxiety about sparking massive public outrage that will change from the Celebration."

This is a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when one views evidence presented in two reports released this year by the Uyghur Individual Rights Project (UHRP) and Amnesty Worldwide which fine detail eyewitness accounts from the use of deadly reside fire towards Uyghur protestors within July 2009. Additionally, the declaration which fireplace wouldn't be used towards Han Chinese protestors offers resonances for the different approach taken by Chinese language protection forces in Urumchi in order to Han Chinese language direct orders in September '09. During individuals protests, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, tackled demonstrators, that experienced demanded that he inform them about federal government reactions in order to protection concerns. A similar request to satisfy with the Party Assistant by Uyghur demonstrators in July was not fulfilled.

The wider repercussions of the unrest additionally noticed a brief dialogue on the impact it might have on Iran-China relationships, and on relations with Sydney after Globe Uyghur Our elected representatives Leader, Microsoft. Rebiya Kadeer, talked at the National Press Membership in Canberra in July '09. In the second option situation, china government "privately warn[ed] a major Aussie bank that vendors the nation's Press Club to use it's influence to block the Kadeer speech there".

The United States' concerns about the situation within the Uyghur region are available through in the cables. Inside a dialogue on plan direction within Tibet, U.S. officials clarify that it will be impossible with regard to Chinese frontrunners to adopt a softer line "if they look like they are doing so under international pressure". The actual cable dated 04 16, 2008, 30 days following the outbreak associated with unrest in Tibetan regions, also relayed the actual observation "that household stability continues to be leadership's top priority most of all, which means there will ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no relaxation of the present difficult collection upon Tibet or perhaps in places such as Xinjiang." The information contained in the cable television additionally sheds light on the extreme sensitivity that china government sights territorial ethics, and also the feasible spill more than associated with unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of methods to stress within Tibet as well as Xinjiang as a result of municipal culture are discussed in a Feb Twenty-four, 2008 cable television. Whilst recommending that China's financial achievement will increase it's resistance to democratic change, the actual cable also discusses how Chinese frontrunners begin to see the usefulness associated with "a limited growth associated with civil culture, including improvements in the rule associated with regulation along with a more powerful role with regard to approved religions, NGOs, non profit organizations and other actors in places which contribute to sociable stability and don't problem Communist Celebration rule." This is a notable change in thinking, that has observed Ough.S. authorities market the idea which Chinese financial development, as well as financial relations with China will bring in regards to a steadily democratic society; however, more faith seems to be placed in the grassroots movement compared to one which starts from the best levels of the Chinese federal government. Nevertheless, the cable television proves that "[i]n places such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, the fear of separatism results in tight limitations on the growth of municipal culture." This approach is viewed as counter-productive through the recognized, that shows that the actual U.S. federal government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's human privileges report as well as appeal to China's developing awareness which greater regard for individual rights, religious freedom and also the rule associated with law will serve to promote the very development and social stability that China seeks as well as to enhance China's worldwide image." This type of strategy would consider considerable diplomatic skills considering "China's paranoid fear that the Usa privately promotes regime change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The cables provide understanding of the actual daily company of diplomacy that's hardly ever owned by everyone, which is fascinating to notice the amount of work carried out nowadays on Uyghur problems. The significance of the part of the us as a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual privileges problems within private conversations is created obvious, and contrasts using its tactful public position. The staff of the Uyghur Human Privileges Project is actually well aware of the pressure china government puts upon Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the facts associated with Chinese government pressure on its counterparts is illustrative of the degree that Chinese officials make an effort to control contradictory narratives. With more facts in the future through Wikileaks, concerns over Uyghurs might not grab the headlines, however the wires possess shed brand new gentle on the paperwork associated with individual rights problems in the Uyghur area.

Whether it had been ever in doubt, info acquired through the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese language government fears more than it's continued control of the location this phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out cables through U.S. diplomats demonstrate the extent to which Chinese government bodies make an effort to persuade government authorities worldwide to consider its position on issues affecting Uyghurs. The cables also show the U . s . States' issues and views concerning the on going repressive measures in the region.

Most illuminating of Chinese language federal government stress would be the wires directed to Chinese language anger, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to third countries. A Dec 29, 2008 cable relates how Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi met with the U.S. Ambassador to The far east in order to voice Beijing's strong competitors associated with launch to any kind of nation other than The far east, and that if the Ough.S. did certainly accede to this ask for it might "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and to co-operation ‘in essential areas'". Furthermore, the February '09 cable explains how the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the possible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfriendly act towards us" along with a "slap in the face". The Ough.S. government was firm in not releasing the actual detainees in order to The far east demonstrates the extent of the politicized nature of the Chinese judicial system. Legitimate issues over terrorism tend to be understandable, however in the U.S. government's view the detainees might probably encounter torture as well as delivery if they returned to The far east

Chinese language federal government stress in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only applied to the actual U.S. federal government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand along with a number of Western government authorities that were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, as well as Eu member says just about all appear to have paid for the impact of Chinese government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, that was at first willing to think about two Uyghurs on solely humanitarian grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were much less better than additional detainees due to the negative effects taking Uyghurs might have on relations with China. A Might Eight, 2009 cable applies how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented that Indonesia had informed China of the U.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees held from Guantánamo coupled with already been consequently warned by The far east associated with ‘a heavy burden on bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia were to simply accept any detainees".

The diplomatic cables also talk about the unrest within Urumchi, the actual local funds, in This summer 2009. The July Thirteen, 2009 cable discussing bulk incidents in The far east states:

"Ethnic riots such as those who work in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet in March of 08 differ substantially within source and character from mass incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each existing severe problems for the Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Party leadership wouldn't hesitate to open fire on Uighurs or Tibetans when they considered it necessary to restore purchase. Bulk incidents present a different kind of threat, he said, since the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fireplace upon Han rioters for fear of sparking massive public outrage that will turn against the Party."

This can be a relaxing opinion, especially when 1 views the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews launched this year through the Uyghur Human Rights Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide that detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of deadly reside fire towards Uyghur protestors in July '09. Additionally, the observation that fireplace wouldn't be deployed against Han Chinese language protestors offers resonances for the different strategy used through Chinese language protection causes in Urumchi in order to Han Chinese language direct orders within Sept '09. Throughout individuals direct orders, then Party Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, who experienced demanded he let them know regarding government reactions in order to protection issues. An identical request to satisfy with the Celebration Secretary by Uyghur protesters in This summer was not met.

The wider consequences of the unrest also noticed a short dialogue on the impact it would possess upon Iran-China relations, as well as on relations with Australia following Globe Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the Nationwide Press Club within Canberra in July 2009. In the second option situation, china federal government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian bank which sponsors the National Push Membership to make use of it's impact to block a Kadeer talk there".

The U . s . States' issues concerning the scenario within the Uyghur area are available via within the wires. Inside a discussion on plan path within Tibet, Ough.S. authorities explain that it'll end up being not possible with regard to Chinese frontrunners to consider the much softer collection "if they appear like they are doing so under worldwide pressure". The actual cable television out dated April Sixteen, 2008, one month after the episode associated with unrest in Tibetan regions, also relayed the actual observation "that domestic balance remains the leadership's main concern most of all, meaning there'll ‘almost surely' be absolutely no rest from the current hard line upon Tibet or perhaps in places like Xinjiang." The information contained in the cable television also sheds gentle on the extreme sensitivity that china federal government views territorial integrity, and the feasible drip more than associated with unrest from Tibet.

The chance of methods to stress within Tibet as well as Xinjiang as a result of civil society are debated in a Feb 24, 2008 cable television. Whilst suggesting that China's economic achievement will increase its potential to deal with democratic reform, the actual cable also discusses how Chinese language leaders see the effectiveness of "a limited growth of civil society, such as enhancements in the guideline of regulation and a stronger part for approved beliefs, NGOs, charities and other stars within areas that bring about social stability and don't challenge Communist Party guideline." This can be a significant alternation in considering, which has observed U.S. authorities promote the idea that Chinese economic development, and financial relationships with China will bring in regards to a steadily democratic culture; however, more belief appears to be placed in the grassroots motion compared to one which begins in the top quantity of a Chinese government. Nevertheless, the actual cable television concludes that "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tighter limitations about the growth of municipal society." This approach is viewed as counter-productive through the recognized, that suggests that the actual U.Utes. government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual rights report and appeal to China's developing awareness that greater respect with regard to individual rights, spiritual freedom and also the rule of law assists to advertise the development and social stability that China looks for in addition to to improve China's international picture." Such a strategy might take substantial diplomatic abilities considering "China's paranoid fear that the United States secretly encourages routine alter and ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The cables provide insight into the actual daily company of diplomacy that's rarely owned by everyone, and it is fascinating to notice the amount of work carried out nowadays upon Uyghur issues. The significance of the role of the United States as a keep track of associated with Uyghur human rights problems in personal discussions is made clear, as well as contrasts with its tactful public stance. The staff from the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task is comfortable with the pressure the Chinese government puts on Uyghur activists; still, the facts associated with Chinese language federal government pressure on it's alternatives is illustrative of the degree which Chinese officials attempt to control contrary stories. With increased revelations in the future from Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not grab the head lines, however the cables possess shed brand new light on the documentation associated with individual rights problems within the Uyghur area.

So, the Uyghurs are now part of the fifty six racial minority groups having been well known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This law will allow them a few rights in a land exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, seems very illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang, and its distance with countries well-known as very sensitive, highly urged the government to speed up the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the higher responsibility jobs.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but in particular the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly keep up their identification and their ethnic heritage , even though they become a minority on their own territory.

People Making Money Online

Two years ago, when The New York Times’ Gerry Marzorati spoke at the Berkeley School of Journalism, “the newspaper was in free fall. I remember people volunteering to give you money,” Michael Pollan recalled.

Last night, when Marzorati, now the Times’ Assistant Managing Editor for New Products and Strategies, gave a talk at Berkeley about “Making the Online Times Pay,” the mood was much more optimistic. Marzorati told Pollan and Mark Danner, who jointly moderated the talk, that he was confident the Times’ new metered paywall system would be a success, and might even bring in enough revenue to enable the Times to expand.

But he was much less sanguine about the future of publications that cannot rely, as the Times and a few other publications do, on an elite readership.

“The audience for The New York Times — which is an affluent, well-educated audience — that audience will pay for premium information,” Marzorati said. (“Of course, advertisers want to reach that audience, too,” he noted later.)

“That has implications for other sections of society, other cohorts, that I think are going to increasingly get less clear, less concise, less thorough journalism.” It’s a national problem, he suggested. “We are living in a country where we are having inequality of all sorts, and one of the inequalities that is growing is the inequality between the really well informed and the not-well informed,” Marzorati said.

The print-and-ink news devices of the past served readers, rich or poor, with the same content in the same format. Not so with the iPad.

Asked at an event on Monday whether “the iPad is the solution” for the future of newspapers, Marzorati replied, “I think these devices are good for The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times and The Economist and the New Yorker. Whether it’s actually going to mean we’re going to have a better-informed society because of these devices, I’m not at all sure.”

“The most affluent parts of the culture are better informed than they’ve ever been,” he noted. “They understand how to navigate the terrain, and they can get tremendous amounts of information. The public which used to get their nightly news from the nightly network broadcast and Time and Newsweek, are they better informed now? No. I think they’re misinformed to an extent that would have been unimaginable in the 60s.”

“Someone who used to watch the network news because that was available is now watching Glenn Beck, and that person is not informed.”

But the extent to which individual news outlets can affect that situation, he noted Tuesday, is questionable. “I think it is a problem for our civic culture,” he said. “It’s not one the Times itself can really change.”

Marzorati didn’t add many details on Tuesday about the Times’ planned implementation of its metered paywall — which is “is in the final testing phase” and expected to “launch shortly,” per Times Company CEO Janet Robinson — although he did say that the paper might charge an additional fee, even to print subscribers, for full access to the Times across multiple platforms.

“If you are someone who only uses the Times occasionally and comes through search, you’ll continue to do that. You’ll continue to go to the homepage as many times as you want,” he noted. But “for someone who is having an online equivalent of the deep, immersive experience of reading the print version, if you’re reading many stories beginning to end, day in and day out, you will eventually get a notice that if you want to continue the experience, you are going to have to pay.”

The idea is to leverage the loyalty — and goodwill — of dedicated Times readers. “This isn’t going to  be a panacea or a silver bullet,” Marzorati noted. “There’s a feeling that the people — what we know about those people — these people will be willing to pay to subscribe.”

Danner asked Marzorati about the Times’ paywall plan in light of polling statistics suggesting that only 18 percent of people who currently read a newspaper would be willing to pay to read it online.

“Obviously, we have seen the numbers,” Marzorati replied. “We just think the Times is different. We don’t think the Times is the Detroit Free Press, the Chicago Tribune. We think we have a connection with our readership which is different.”

The difference, he clarified, is that Freep and Trib readers may not be as willing or able as Times readers to pay a premium price for premium news. And that “is a gigantic problem, and the implications are going to play out in ways we don’t even know yet. I think, in particular, in state capitals, the falloff of covering state houses is going to be terrible.”

Marzorati also noted that one of the reasons the Times has been able to weather the news industry crisis as well as it has is that, instead of being dependent on local advertising dollars, it was able to get national advertising — including luxury advertising.

And the paywall, he said, shouldn’t hurt the paper’s advertising revenues. “We understand that the aggregate large number [of viewers] will come down. That’s just the price you pay for asking people to pay the price. Whether advertisers will care — I think not. I think a) there will be enough people who continue to use the website immersively, and b) there is also a propensity among advertisers to value someone paying for the product more than getting the product for free. They get information about users that they would not get otherwise, and they feel that that person has a deeper attachment to the product.”

Besides, he noted: “Remember the main place to advertise is the homepage, and the homepage will be available for free.”

The criterion for judging the success of the paywall, he said, is whether it will allow the Times to grow and expand its coverage. “We know we will survive, and that we will survive very much like we are now. But the challenge for us is how to grow as a business — which is to say, increasingly make profits the size of which we can then plow back and invest in the organization.”

“Obviously, if we were able to get a sizable percentage of the people who use the site in one way or another to pay for the site, that allows for all kinds of growth.”

And that growth will include global expansion. “We’re going to be building a kind of mini website for India,” Marzorati noted. India “is an enormous newspaper-reading culture that is only now beginning to transition online, and we want to be there and we want to have a product that not only appeals to Indians, but also Indians in the diaspora who might want information about India from a product that they are now using here.” So “we’re plowing money into that.”

For the Times, he said, “growth is about figuring out interesting ways to invest and do more different kinds of journalism.” And for now, the ability to grow is a goal along with growth itself. “We would just like to have that kind of mindset. “

There’s a new gazillionaire in town. Online gaming firm Gazillion Entertainment has hired John Needham, former head of Cryptic Studios, as its new chief executive as the company enters a new stage of its development of massively multiplayer online games.

San Mateo, Calif.-based Gazillion is one of the highest-profile video game start-ups, since it has raised a lot of money ($60 million in its last round alone) and has multiple studios making very ambitious games. Under Needham, the company will complete its shift to a new business model in response to major changes in the way consumers play online games. That’s a wrenching shift, but it’s a necessary one in the face of the disruption happening in the industry.

Needham said in an interview that the company is in the process of converting all of its major games to the free-to-play business model, where users start playing a game for free and pay real money for virtual goods such as decorations or better weapons. That model took off first in Asia and is now sweeping through everything from iPhone games to massively multiplayer online games such as the high-quality games Gazillion makes.

“Free-to-play is gaining a foothold here,” Needham (pictured) said. “That is where the secret sauce is for the industry.”

Needham has been a leader in games since 2001, when he became senior vice president of business development and operations at Sony Online Entertainment. He left Sony in 2008 to become chief executive of Cryptic Studios, an MMO publisher in Los Gatos, Calif. There, he helped publish the Champions Online game, which wasn’t a big success at first but did better after its shift to free-to-play games. He sold the company to Atari and led the launch of the company’s Star Trek Online game, which had mixed results but which Needham says was profitable.

At Gazillion, Needham will have his hands full, because the company is one of the most ambitious in the game business, with three major studios focusing on high-quality online games. David Brevik, a former Blizzard executive, became No. 2 at Gazillion in January, and Needham says he looks forward to working with him. Gazillion has more than 200 employees.

Rob Hutter, former CEO and now chairman, said he welcomes Needham to the new job. Under Hutter, the company has gone through some twists and turns, acquiring studios and shutting one down. Gazillion’s first studio was Slipgate Ironworks, an MMO developer founded by Doom co-creator John Romero. But Gazillion shuttered the game and laid off its staff. Romero left to run his own Facebook games studio, Loot Drop.

The company’s NetDevil studio in Louisville, Colo., also worked on a work-for-hire game for Lego, dubbed Lego Universe. After Lego Universe launched, NetDevil laid off some of the team and then transferred the remaining workers to Lego, which assumed responsibility for maintaining it. The remaining team at NetDevil is working on Fortune Online, a real-time strategy game for the web.

Another Gazillion studio, Seattle-based Amazing Society, is working on Marvel Super Hero Squad. That kid-focused online game is expected to launch in the coming months in conjunction with a show on the Cartoon Network. And the last studio is Secret Identity Studios in San Mateo, Calif., which is working on Marvel Universe, an MMO based on Marvel Comics characters.

Investors include Oak Investment Partners, Hearst Interactive Media, Revolution Ventures, Pelion Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Abu Dhabi Media Company and Temasak Holdings.

Rivals include Bigpoint, Riot Games and a variety of other online game companies.
